12 Points to Check Before Sending Your Resume

Looking for a new job? Then you know what is the most critical tool that can help you gain that first favourable impression with any prospective employer – your resume. It’s not just a profile or a listing of your personal, academic and professional achievements – it is the single biggest factor that determines whether you are shortlisted for that dream job of yours or not.

Having seen countless resumes and the response of organisations to them, we would like to present a list of items you must take care of while creating the perfect resume that represents who you are.

1. Share a Cover Letter with the resume
A cover letter is an indispensable part of every job application. It is the first thing the employer will read; so in effect it introduces you to the employer and highlights your relevant skills and experience. Remember to customize your cover letter for each job application you make. This helps to demonstrate your interest in the job, shows that you have put in the effort to understand the requirements of the position and highlights how you are uniquely placed to satisfy the organisation’s requirements.

2. Use the same font in the entire document
Remember that consistency is key when it comes to the appearance of your resume. Use the same font throughout the resume. This makes it look professional and easier to read. Choose a font that is easy to read and use a size between 10 and 12 points. Highlight the headings so the different sections are easier to spot in case the employer is skimming through.

3. Attach a passport-sized formal photograph
Including a photograph in your resume is not mandatory, but it can help to create a positive impression. If you decide to include a photograph, ensure that it is a recent passport-sized colour photograph in formal attire where your face is clearly visible.

4. Keep it updated and relevant
Ensure that your work experience and skill set are updated and relevant to the job you are applying for. This demonstrates your capabilities and shows that you have the necessary skills and experience for the job.

5. Highlight the achievements and rewards
Your achievements and rewards demonstrate your capabilities and accomplishments. Include information that is result-oriented and highlights your achievements and accomplishments. Use bullet points or a tabular structure so it’s easier to read. Examples of achievements include awards, recognition, successful projects, failures from which you have taken long-lasting lessons etc.

6. Give your contact details
Ensure that your resume includes your contact information, including your mobile number, WhatsApp number and LinkedIn profile link. This makes it easier for the employer to contact and connect with you.

7. Add your present & permanent address
This is important as it helps the employer understand your current location, your locational background and potential commuting distance.

8. Mention locational and relocation preferences
If you have a preferred location or are willing to relocate, include this information in your resume. This helps the employer to understand your flexibility and willingness to work in different locations.

9. Avoid too much information about your hobbies
While it is important to show your personality in your resume, avoid including too many details about your hobbies and interests. The exception to this rule is if you have a unique hobby, or an interest that aligns with the organisation.

10. Avoid negative comments about a former or present employer.
Never include negative comments about a former or present employer in your resume. This can create a bad impression and significantly harm your chances of getting the job.

11. Include your date of birth.
This is important as some companies have age restrictions or prefer candidates of a certain age group. However, in some countries, volunteering this information could be considered ill-mannered. So check the country-specific requirement before you add this.

12. Spelling and grammatical mistakes.
Spelling and grammatical mistakes show a lack of attention to detail. Proofread your resume carefully and ensure that it is error-free. You could use online tools to check for spelling and grammatical errors.

A well-prepared resume can help you stand out from other candidates and increase your chances of landing your dream job. Remember to tailor your resume to each job application, as this shows your interest and dedication to the position. Always keep in mind that your resume is a reflection of your personality and capabilities, and it is essential to present yourself in the best possible light.
