WIIFM – What’s in it for me?

In the times of Change, while moving from the old to the New, Organizations often find a lot of disengagement and disinterest amongst employees with respect to the work they are assigned as a result of the change, because of the following key reasons:

  • They do not understand the importance of the work in the changed scenario
  • They do not know why THEY have been chosen to do it
  • They do not understand the value the work will bring

When this is the thought process, there is a huge disconnect between the deliverables and the expectations.

It is extremely imperative for Leaders to ensure that their people understand the value of doing something by educating them on:

  • The need for the activity
  • How everyone (including the individual) will benefit from the activity

Once these concerns are clarified and the efforts of the individuals are validated, the Company can expect a much better buy-in from the team members and they would perform much better, the commitment is higher and focus is undivided.

On the other hand, when people are just pushed into a change and assigned responsibilities without a logical explanation, they fail to attach any value to the work, and this marks the beginning of a huge disconnect and work quality is compromised.

People feel most engaged when the big question of WIIFM is answered“

Why is the work important for the division, for the organization, for the Individual?

What value will it bring to the stakeholders?

What will happen if it is not done?

Why Am I doing it?

What will I learn?

People perform their best when they know exactly WHY they need to do it.
